The official portal of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg provides an interesting overview of Luxembourg. More interesting facts about Luxembourg can be found on the website of the OECD.

National symbols (section: History and symbols)

The following symbols with regard to the Luxembourg state should be known:

  • Coat of Arms

There are three grades of the Grand Duchy's coat of arms: small, medium and great

  • National Flag

The flag is horizontally striped with red, white and blue.

Interesting:

The Dutch flag is also horizontally striped with red, white and blue.

But: => The Grand Duchy's blue is sky blue and the Dutch's blue is ultramarine.

  • National Anthem

The national anthem consists of the first and the last verses of the song "Ons Heemecht" (Lützeburgisch, in Englisch: our homeland) by Michel Lentz

  • 23 June - National Day

Luxembourgs first real national holiday was the birthday of Grand Duchess Charlotte (reigned 1919 - 1964) on 23 January. But it was moved to a more "summery" day - which is now 23 June.

Festivals and traditions (section: Culture and traditions)

Easter, Christmas and other religious festivals are in Luxembourg very important - as in many other countries.

Some specific festivals are:

  • The Hopping Procession of Echternach
  • Funfair in Luxembourg City (Schueberfouer)
  • Bonfire Festival (Buergbrennen)
  • Candlemas Day (Liichtmessdag)
  • Pretzel Sunday (Bretzelsonndeg)

Traditional Luxembourgish food

  • Bouneschlupp, a thick soup made from green beans, potatoes and bacon. Often served together with potatoe pancakes and sometimes enriched with various vegetables like carrots, leeks, celery, onions,...
  • Friture de la Moselle, a fried fish dish, traditionally eaten with fingers, served with wedges.
  • Gromperekichelcher, crispy fried potatoe cakes / fritters, made of potatoes, onions, parsley, egg, flour and salt. You can often find them on sale at markets and fairs everywhere.
  • More traditional food can be found here.

Although Luxembourg is a relative small state, there are plenty of interesting activities to do. To get an idea of what to do, why not browse visitluxembourg? There are plenty of suggestions like hiking, Castle-tour to museums and open air cinema.
