short program description

As defined by the Council of Europe, au pair placement is the temporary reception by families, in exchange for certain services of young foreigners who come to improve their linguistic and possibly professional knowledge as well as their general culture by acquiring a better knowledge of the country where they are received.

The Law on Foreign Nationals, in effect since 1 January 2008, has introduced the following changes: Au pairs from third countries (not from EU/EFTA) can only receive permits if they are placed through an agency which is approved and licensed by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). Currently, there are only few such agencies specializing in the placement of au-pairs.

Au pairs must be between 18 to 25 years old.

Note:

Since 2015 In some cantons of Switzerland only permits for au pairs from EU /EFTA States are issued due to a quota reduction by the Federal Council (Bewilligungspraxis im Kanton St. Gallen = Approval practice in the canton fo St. Gallen, only available in German)
